Most Important Design Principles for Apple Watch Apps

Designing apps for Apple Watch is the new design challenge for iOS designers and developers because the smaller screen of this new platform has more constraints for user interaction. The Apple Watch is still a new and challenging frontier that requires having in-depth knowledge of the dynamics and visual challenges of creating a winning user experience.

Basic Aspects of Apple Watch UI

It is important to know that most Apple Watch apps are merely slimmer, slicker, and in some cases stripped down versions of traditional iOS apps made for iPhone and iPad devices.  Most Apple Watch apps are far from independent, and they only work in conjunction with their mobile apps that are used in the connected iPhone or iPad.

Why Being Better isn’t Always Best

As it turns out, those cliché posters you see are right: “Be yourself and good things will happen.” At least it’s true in the mobile app market these days.

Instead of improving on the same common formula, try creating something completely different. Creating apps that are ingeniously different and uniquely creative can be a game changer. With 2015 ending soon, it’s time to implement some strategies to make 2016 your best year yet!

Why does focusing on creating something different have an advantage over always being better?

The short answer is, more times than not, trying to become better than your competition is more expensive than being different. Being different for the right reasons evens the playing field and connects with the aspect of human nature that wants to be trendy. The app world is a unique marketplace where the indie developer can actually compete with huge gaming studios, often with more profitability and creative opportunities. The big studios may have more resources, but with  more resources usually comes more red tape. Large overhead and constant pressure to produce similarly themed apps that are congruent with the company’s brand can kill great ideas. It can also slow down reaction time to market trends in the app stores. A smaller game studio or indie developer has fewer restrictions and more room to grow ideas faster and naturally. In the instantaneous world of social media, even the smallest ideas can become overnight successes.

The State of the Developer Nation Q1 2015 Study by Mobile Vision defines 8 main motivations for launching an app, from building a money-maker business to reaching self achievement and fun. All this data is extremely interesting but, to say it better… our list is a bit longer. Our belief is that an app can be created regardless of what the thought behind the idea was. If you are producing an app just to make money, great. If you are building a gaming app, that is great too. But lets say you wanted to build an app that tracks the migration patterns of turkeys….what? This is what gets us excited. We thrive on creating the most unique apps with the most unusual requests.
